Apple sells 100 millionth iPod, deems experiment a success

Apple sells 100 millionth iPod, deems experiment a success: ”

Filed under:

Has it really only been five and a half years since the first iPod rolled off the assembly line and into the initially-skeptical arms of music-loving consumers worldwide? Well since that time we’ve seen an entire ecosystem of third-party and DIY accessories sprout up around Apple’s ubiquitous little jukebox — from the pretty handy to the just plain weird – along with endless humorous anecdotes, an infinite number of knockoffs, serious political, legal, and environmental movements, and of course, an almost daily barrage of wild rumors the likes of which the world has never known. So it’s with mixed emotion that we welcome the 100 millionth iPod into the world (enough for almost every man, woman, and child in Mexico): on the one hand, it gives us warm fuzzies to see perennial underdog Apple come out on top for a change, but we also hope that the company employs its leadership position responsibly, such as being a little less quick to sic the lawyers on anyone who dares use the ‘Pod’ name in vain. And as for the next 100 million iPods? Is PC-less downloading just over the horizon? When will we finally see the move to an all flash lineup? Will Apple finally take the leap and merge its prize pig with — gasp! — a cellular telephone? As always, only time — and Uncle Steve — will tell.

Casio rolls out Exilim EX-Z11

Casio rolls out Exilim EX-Z11

The Casio Exilim EX-Z11 has bolted out of the stable doors, bringing consumers a point-and-shoot digital camera that features 7.2 megapixels of goodness with 3x optical zoom, a 2.6′ LCD display, and the Anti Shake DSP, Auto Macro, and Quick Shutter functions to reduce the chances of snapping a blurred image due to you missing your cup of coffee this morning or moving subjects. Casio claims that the lithium ion battery offers a superior battery life, but that remains to be seen in real world performance. The Exilim EX-Z11 is available for purchase, but we are still in the dark concerning pricing details.

TufTab UMPC rolls out next month

TufTab UMPC rolls out next month

The TufTab UMPC is one tough nut and targets those who work in warehouses or construction sites as those environments aren’t exactly optimal for you to whip out your shiny, scratch free Vaio. The TufTab comes with a 7′ TFT LCD touchscreen display that is viewable even under sunlight and is compliant with the IP53 standard, making it resistant to both heat and water. A 1.2GHz Via processor runs the show, while additional features include WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity and a 40GB hard drive. You can choose to run Vista, XP or Linux on it, although I would recommend against Vista considering the sub-par specs. Interested parties can pick up the TufTab from the middle of next month onwards for $1,699.

SmartNavi DOTN-430 GPS system

SmartNavi DOTN-430 GPS system: ”

SmartNavi DOTN-430 GPS system

CeBIT 2007 certainly saw a large number of GPS navigation systems, and here we have the SmartNavi DOTN-430 that offers a decent performance based on the specifications alone, but doesn’t really come with anything special that breaks it from the mould. Features include a 4.3′ TFT LCD touchscreen 260k color display, a SiRFStar III GPS chipset, 64MB RAM , and a 300MHz Samsung processor. It is also capable of supporting up to 1GB of flash ROM as well as the majority of audio and video formats. No idea on how much it costs, nor whether it will make it to Europe or North America.

Mvix: An Apple TV Alternative

March 25, 2007 by cameti2

Mvix: An Apple TV Alternative: ”

MvixThe people over at Mvix, makers of the Mvix MX-760HD (a Linux-based wireless media center), have done a comparison of their product and the gadget of the moment, the Apple TV.

For those of you looking for a media center or media center extender device, the Mvix is a great alternative to the Apple TV. I tested out the Mvix MX-760HD a couple of weeks ago. The Mvix is about the size of a large external hard drive. It does not ship with an hard drive, but you can install one if you choose. Installation requires removing thumbscrews, and popping in the drive. The fit is a little tight, but it works.

Regardless of whether you install a hard drive, the device can stream many kinds of data from your network. The Mvix handled every type of file I tried, including VOB files. However, it cannot play protected content. I did experience some stutter in video playback with large, DVD-sized files while streaming video wirelessly. For the most part, video playback was quite good.

If you do chose to install a hard drive, you can hook up the drive to your computer and drag and drop files. If you are sharing video from a Mac, you will want to use something like SharePoints to allow the Mvix to access the files. If you choose to get the Mvix, take a look over at OReillyNet.com for an excellent article about how to hook up an Mvix to your Mac network.

Hooking the Mvix up to a television was a snap. The Mvix has composite out (for older televisions), S-Video out, component out, and DVI out. It supports resolutions up to 1080P (the Apple TV tops out at 720P).

The device itself is not as stylish as an Apple TV, but it is far from ugly. The interface is not as snazzy as an Apple TV, but if you can live without the flashiness, the Mvix is a quite capable machine. It costs $299 over at ThinkGeek.

Bridging the Computer-to-TV Divide

March 25, 2007 by cameti2

Bridging the Computer-to-TV Divide: “Today in The Times, I reviewed the Apple TV box-and, for context, a couple of its rivals from Microsoft and Netgear.
Let me tell you, I haven’t worked so hard on a column in a very, very long time.
The first problem was just getting them to work. Solving home-network problems can be tough slogging indeed, and [...]“

iPod Alarm Clock Tutorial

March 25, 2007 by cameti2

iPod Alarm Clock Tutorial: “The iPod’s Alarm Clock is nestled among other features like Calendar and Notes under the iPod’s Extras menu. While you may already be familiar with many of the iPod Extras (especially Games), the Alarm Clock is largely an under appreciated feature.

Whether you prefer to be woken by the scream of a rock star or the French horn in a classical symphony, the iPod’s Alarm Clock can help you open your eyes every morning with style!
